1) FLIGHTS TO NORWAY

If you want to have your flights organized hassle-free (with customer support and the possibility to change names, etc.), please forward this PDF to sherpasride@zaletsi.cz. Please add your NAME, SURNAME, and CITY OF DEPARTURE.

  • Arrival destination: Tromsø Airport, Langnes

  • Arrival time and date: Saturday (first day of the trip) no later than 12:00 pm (noon), or Friday (day earlier, any time)

  • Departure destination: Tromsø Airport, Langnes

  • Departure time and date: Saturday (last day of the trip any time (breakfast is served on the boat at 8:00 am), or Friday (day earlier) after 9 pm (21:00).

If you have problems finding a flight that fits this schedule, please get in touch; we can organize extra nights in Tromsø.
When flying with a stopover (for example, in Oslo), please always ask the airport staff at the original airport if you need to re-check your luggage. It is important to know this and follow the instructions; otherwise, your luggage might not be delivered to the final destination.

2) ACCOMMODATION BEFORE AND AFTER THE CAMP

In case you arrive before the start of the camp, we recommend choosing one of the following hotels for the extra nights. These hotels are experienced with our guests: Hotel Viking Tromsø or Clarion Hotel Aurora.

3) OUR BOAT

During the trip, you will stay on the boat. We hire the boat from a local charter company with a long history (20+ years)  and skippers with great area knowledge.

For our group trips we usually have either Bavaria 51 (5 cabins, 3 bathrooms) or Delphia 49 (5 cabins, 4 bathrooms). (Differences in layout compared to links are possible. Both double beds and twins are available on both boats)

For private trips we either use above mentioned boats (groups of 7) or Hanse 458 (groups of 6 and less people, 4 cabins, 2 bathrooms, layout of Hanse, double beds only)

There are towels on the boat, as well as duvets with linen. No need to take a sleeping bag.

There is no Wi-Fi on the boat. The coverage of the cell phone data is great on the boat and also out in the mountains.

Lyngen fjords are usually calm waters, so seasickness is generally not an issue on our trips. We only had a handful of clients with mild and short seasickness. Take motion sickness pills, and talk to the skipper if you are afraid of seasickness, he/she will give you some prevention tactics.

4) SPECIAL ITEMS FOR THE BOAT

Regarding the clothes needed for the boat, you do not need any special sailing jackets and trousers. If you have Gore-Tex clothes for skiing, you can wear them onboard. You can wear hiking shoes, preferably water-resistant. It is not necessary to have gumboots.

We highly recommend having Merino clothes as a base layer.

You can easily pack some lunch with you from the food we have for breakfast. You do not need to buy any lunch.

5) WHAT HAPPENS ON YOUR FIRST DAY IN NORWAY?

Once you’ve arrived in Norway and collected your luggage, you can head to the marina either by taxi or by bus. The bus option is both easy and budget-friendly.
Before we board, we’ll do a final check of all our gear.

Our goal is to set sail by 4 PM, ensuring we reach our first stop in time for dinner.

6) TRANSPORT TO THE MARINA

Take either a taxi or bus from the airport.

Taxi: Best arranged just by walking to the car park in front of the airport and asking Tromsø Taxi (T logo on the door). Go to BOREAL YACHTING marina in Eidkjosen (address: Eidvegen 666, 9100 Kvaløysletta, map).

Bus: Very straightforward option. Much cheaper. Take bus number 42 to Eidkjosen and walk around 8 minutes to the marina.
The bus stop is located on the side closer to the airport.
You will need the Troms Billett app (download for Apple or Android).
If you have time to spend, it’s better to spend it in town and arrive at the marina at the agreed hour.

7) ARRIVAL TIME TO THE MARINA

Around 2 days before the trip, we will send you an email with an invitation to a WhatsApp group and also inform you about the meeting time at the marina. (If everyone is arriving on time, it should be early afternoon; we will confirm in the email).

8) DO I NEED MY AVALANCHE AIRBAG BAG IN NORWAY?

Yes. We strongly recommend it.
If you are flying with an airbag, you will need to print IATA terms and a description of your cartridge (this one is for Mammut, but you will find yours on the producer’s website) and show it to the airport staff upon check-in luggage scan.

Bring your avalanche bag as carry-on and ideally inform your airline that you will be transporting such an airbag. Do not leave your backpack as checked-in luggage. You’ll run the risk of having it detained during transport.

9) RENTING AND BUYING GEAR AND CLOTHES IN TROMSØ

Buying clothes:
In Jekta Mall, you can find these shops:

  • XXL (similar to Decathlon)
  • Friluft Butiken (more specialized)
  • Sportoutlet
  • Tromsø Ski og Sykkel (good for buying ski boots)

Renting:

10) INSURANCE FOR BAGGAGE AND TRAVEL

Baggage: Some of the guys on the previous trip didn’t get their luggage delivered and had to rent replacement gear in Tromsø. Please make sure your insurance covers that situation.

Travel insurance requirements:

  • Covering ski touring and off-piste (backcountry) skiing above the polar circle (around the 70th parallel)
  • Sailing activities
  • Touring on an island (without access by road or bridge)

Please find recommendations for insurance. As we do not follow up on changes in particular insurance policies, please contact the insurance company for the specifics.
(If your local insurance does not work, you can try these 2 Czech options:
ČHS membership + E30 tariff (for Norway) or S30 tariff (for Japan) + dangerous sports at this link ČHS Shop or ERV in the Czech Republic.
For ERV insurance, you need to fill out a specific document (only in CZ; we can help you with filling) and send it to klient@ervpojistovna.cz.

11) WHAT GEAR SHOULD I TAKE

12) CARTRIDGE REFILL

If you are traveling with an empty cartridge for your avalanche backpack, you can refill it in Tromsø Outdoor.
They can refill the Mammut Cartridge, but you need to have your own spare rubber ring for refilling.
They can also refill the BCA canister.
Please send an e-mail beforehand to post@tromsooutdoor.no with your request, date, and time when you want to come.
