Ski touring off the beaten path

Based on our experience in Norway since 2016, we’ve crafted an itinerary that highlights sea-to-summit island lines with the majestic peaks of the deeper Arctic region. We’ve steered clear of the more popular parts of Lyngen, which tend to get crowded with Tromsø commuters and typical ski and sail tours.

SENJA is an island where rugged coastlines meet snowy peaks, and its beauty will leave you in awe. TAMOKDALEN is a world-class ski touring playground, typically offering calmer weather and more snow than the coastal areas. We take on the incredible lines of southern LYNGEN, and with the off-the-beaten-path options around our hut in MÅLSELV, there’s plenty to explore in variety of snow conditions. We can even access a tour by a DOG SLED.

For an extra adventure, we can arrange speedboat access to a nearby island and spend a day on the secluded KÅGEN Island.

A highlight of this trip is our accommodation—a traditional Norwegian log cabin with a rich history. Tucked away in a remote location, it’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries.

Itinerary

Flexibility is the key and in this sample itinerary, you can find out what we do. We will adjust this itinerary according to weather conditions and requirements of our guests.

DAY 1 _ Flight to Tromsø | Overnight in Tromsø

Fly to Tromso, check-in in the hotel.

DAY 2 _ Pick-up in Tromsø & first Ski Tour

Pick-up is followed by our first tour in the Lyngen Alps on the way to our accommodation—a log cabin in Målselv. We have numerous options and will decide based on the avalanche forecast, snow conditions, and wind direction.

DAY 3 _ Senja

Senja, nestled between Lofoten and Tromsø, is a true gem of Norway, offering dramatic coastlines, steep peaks, and picturesque fishing villages. Senja, often called ‘Miniature Norway,’ showcases a variety of landscapes and captures the essence of Norway all in a single island.

We’ll plan our visit around the best weather window, aiming for a summit-to-sea descent with breathtaking views of Senja’s coastline. Most of the peaks we’ll tackle are around 900 meters high, and based on the group’s preferences, we can either add more peaks or ski multiple laps on a given peak.

DAY 4 _ Tamokdalen

Tamokdalen, or Tamok Valley, is a beautiful 30-kilometer stretch in Troms, Norway. The valley floor sits at 200 meters above sea level, with peaks reaching up to 1600 meters. Both sides of the road offer fantastic ski-touring options, giving us the flexibility to choose your route based on avalanche risk, snow, and wind conditions. The higher mountains and colder temperatures, combined with the valley’s more continental climate, often mean superb snow conditions.

DAY 5_ Ski tour in our backyard, Målselv with potential dog-sledding access

The peaks near our cabin rise up to 1500 meters, and with mountains all around, it’s entirely up to us which ski tour we choose. We’re based on a husky farm, so if the conditions allow and dogs are up for it :), we can access our ski tour by dog sled.

(Dog sledding is an optional activity, subject to availability, and the cost will be arranged once we’re in Norway.)

DAY 6_ Senja or Tamokdalen

We’ll return to either Senja or Tamokdalen, depending on what we enjoyed most and where the snow conditions were best.

DAY 7_ Lyngen or Kågen Island

On the way back to Tromsø, we’ll either tackle some of the Lyngen peaks or arrange a speedboat to KÅGEN Island. There, we can ski on different aspects of secluded peaks, while being surrounded by the ocean.

(Kågen is an optional activity, subject to availability, and the cost will be arranged once we’re in Norway)

Arrival and Departure times

Please arrive on Saturday for the first night in Tromsø. If your flight connection doesn’t work out, feel free to check options on booking.com for extra nights in Tromsø. We’re happy to provide suggestions.

Your departure can be anytime next Saturday, starting from early morning. We may also be able to get you back to Tromsø for a Friday night departure (8pm or later).

Additional touring days

If you wish to add more touring days or wish to tailor the program to your preferences, let us know. We can modify the itinerary to include more guided days with car access.

Terrain

Lyngen Alps is the place to go freeriding if you are looking for powder in Scandinavia. It is tucked into the mainland so the snow is drier than in other areas. Our mission will be to ski a variety of backcountry terrain – powdery open lines, ocean runs, and classic lines in the area.
We will also take a look at the rugged island of Senja, the world-class touring playground in Tamokdalen and off the beaten path tours around our hut in Malselv. Options are limitless and we will adjust the itinerary to your needs and current weather and avalanche conditions.

Vertical Meters

On this trip, we will ski in secluded places only accessed by ski touring or split boarding. Expect around 1000 – 1200 vert. m daily within 6 days.

Who is it for?

You should have previous ski touring or splitboarding experience (at least 3 tours). You should be able to cover at least 1000 vert. m. daily for 3 days straight. 1 day off is definitely a possibility, more than that would likely hinder your experience.

Group size

We will be a maximum of 6 guests guided by a certified guide.

Thinking about the trip, but not ready to commit?

Leave us your email, and we will let you know when the trip is about to be sold out.

    Expert skiers and riders

Our classic ski touring trip is mostly open lines with some tree-skiing. For expert skiers only we put together an alternative around the most iconic steep lines and couloirs in Lyngen. To name a few, there is Forhorlttinden, nicknamed “The Godmother of all couloirs”. Sofiatinden or Trolvastinden. Crossing the Lyngen peninsula with an amazing downhill around Storgalten is also possible.

Those lines are around 40 to 45 degrees. Safety is the priority for us. If the conditions are not right, our UIAGM guide has more conservative option for each day.
